The Casimir free energy in high- and low-temperature limits

چکیده

The problem with the temperature dependence of the Casimir force is investigated. We analyse high-temperature limit analytically making calculations at real frequencies. The purpose is to answer the question why there is no continuous transition between real and ideal metals and why the result does not depend on the relaxation frequency. It is found that the contribution of evanescent s polarized fields is finite even for an infinitely small relaxation frequency (plasma model) and exactly cancels the contribution of propagating fields. For the ideal metal the evanescent fields do not contribute at all. The lowtemperature limit is analysed to establish behaviour of the entropy at T → 0. It is stressed that the nonlocal effects are important in this limit because the mean free path for electrons becomes larger than the field penetration depth. In this limit vF /a plays the role of the relaxation frequency, where vF is the Fermi velocity and a is the distance between plates. It is indicated that the Leontovich approximate impedance cannot be used for calculations because it is good for the description of propagating but not evanescent fields. It is found that due to nonlocality the Casimir entropy approaches zero at T → 0 when s polarization does not contribute to the classical part of the Casimir force. Casimir Energy of a Dilute Dielectric Ball at Zero and Finite Temperature

The basic results in calculations of the thermodynamic functions of electromagnetic field in the background of a dilute dielectric ball at zero and finite temperature are presented. Summation over the angular momentum values is accomplished in a closed form by making use of the addition theorem for the relevant Bessel functions. The behavior of the thermodynamic characteristics in the low and h...

Temperature correction to Casimir-Lifshitz free energy at low temperatures: semiconductors.

The Casimir force and free energy at low temperatures have been the subject of focus for some time. We calculate the temperature correction to the Casimir-Lifshitz free energy between two parallel plates made of dielectric material possessing a constant conductivity at low temperatures, described through a Drude-type dielectric function. For the transverse magnetic (TM) mode such a calculation ...

Casimir effect for a dilute dielectric ball at finite temperature

The Casimir effect at finite temperature is investigated for a dilute dielectric ball; i.e., the relevant internal and free energies are calculated. The starting point in this study is a rigorous general expression for the internal energy of a system of noninteracting oscillators in terms of the sum over the Matsubara frequencies. Summation over the angular momentum values is accomplished in a ...

Finite Temperature Casimir Effect in Piston Geometry and Its Classical Limit

Abstract. We consider the Casimir force acting on a d-dimensional rectangular piston due to massless scalar field with periodic, Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and electromagnetic field with perfect electric conductor and perfect magnetic conductor boundary conditions. The Casimir energy in a rectangular cavity is derived using cut-off method. It is shown that the divergent part of t...
